Protein shakes bad in the long run? Yes if you drink 6 a day for 10 years! Protein supplementation is perfectly fine, especially for athletes. The average american gets approx. double the amount of protein they need a day, but they are not engaging in intense workout sessions that put the body into negative nitrogen balance and a catabolic state. There are some excellent products out there for post workout recovery. Cytosport, Goldstandard, EAS, all of these are reputable companies. As an athlete you definitely want to EAT your protein sorces...get in your complete proteins from eggs/meat etc. Supplementing with a shake at the end of a workout provides the benefit of getting predigested nutrients and amino acids to the muscles quickly during the crucial 30 min window after a work out. Take home message, if you are working hard in the weightroom, a recovery product is a good idea. Getting quality protein sources throughout the day is also extremely important as this keeps your body in positive nitrogen balance/anabolic state (building muscle!) Hope that helped.
